MOTIVATION THEORIES

Maslow's Hierachy Theory

The Maslow motivation theory is one of the best known and most influential theories on workplace motivation .According that, our actions as human beings are motivated in order to achieve certain needs.

That there are five major need categories that apply to people in general, starting from the fun[1]demented physiological needs and leading through a hierarchy of safety, social and esteem needs to the need for self-fulfillment, the highest need of all. When a lower need is satisfied the next highest becomes dominant and the individual’s attention is turned to satisfying this higher need(Amstrong ,2009)

Psychologist Abraham Maslow's first developed his famous theory of individual development and motivation in the 1940.He suggested that human beings have a hierarchy of needs .That is ,thal all humans act in a way which will address basic needs ,before moving on to satisfy other ,so –called higher level needs .

Maslow represented this theory  as a hierarchical triangle .This shows how basic needs must be met before one can “climb “the hierarchy ,to address more complex needs. for example first one must meet the basic ,physiological need for food ,water and warmth after that the focus would be on the need to be safe ,then the need to belong to social groups ,and so on up the hierarchy

Maslow categorized human needs to five different level .From lowest to highest a mean has to climb up without avoiding a single step (Kaur ,2013) .As per the psychologist the five different levels are as follows

Physiological Needs –Physiological needs are basic human survival requirements .These include foods ,air ,water, clothing ,accommodation ,warmth ,sex ,sleep and other body needs

Safety needs – safety needs are safety and security point of after  completed the physiological needs.

Belongingness and Love Needs – specifically of a man’s ability to exist in a social world. Which includes but not limited to his desire for affection, belonging, acceptance, and friendship.

Esteem Needs – These include both self -respect and the stem of others .For example the desire for self -confidence and achievement ,and recondition and appreciation

Self actualization Needs–This is about the desire to develop and realize your full potential to become everything you can be .

  1. Great blog post Nimesha, Motivation directly links to individual performance that gain to organization performance and as a catalyzer for all individual employees working for an organization to enhance their working performance or to complete task in much better way than they usually do. Organization runs because of people working for it, and each person contributes toward achieving the ultimate goal of an organization. Panagiotakopoulos (2013) concluded that factors affecting staff motivation at a period where the financial rewards are kept to the least leads to stimulate employee performance.

    1. Training refers to ‘‘the systematic accretion of skills, command, concepts or mindset leads to improve performance’’ (Lazazzara and Bombelli 2011). Baldwin et al. (1991) indicates that individuals with higher pre-training motivation on the basis of their willingness to attend training have greater learning outcomes as compared to individuals heaving lower pre-training motivation.
